Can You Place Porcelain Veneers Over Composite Fillings?
When it comes to enhancing the smile, porcelain veneers can do wonders. These restorations are highly durable and stain-resistant, and can dramatically improve the appearance of discolored, chipped, or uneven teeth. With that in mind, veneers are primarily an aesthetic treatment, meaning they may not be the appropriate solution if a patient has more pressing oral health concerns.
In one instance, a patient with composite fillings in their two front teeth sought advice from Dr. Newkirk. Interested in a more polished, natural-looking result, the patient was told by their then-dentist that porcelain veneers could not be applied over the existing composite fillings.
After carefully evaluating the situation, Dr. Newkirk explained that it is, indeed, possible for veneers to be placed over fillings; however, the extent of composite material would influence the best course of action. For teeth with significant composite fillings, Dr. Newkirk recommended considering porcelain crowns, which can not only enhance the appearance of the teeth but also provide added protection against future decay. Alternatively, if the composite was limited to the surface of the front teeth, Dr. Newkirk suggested trimming the composite and applying a porcelain veneer.
Dr. Newkirk emphasized that while many dentists are proficient in creating crowns, a cosmetic dentist with advanced artistic skills and precision can design personalized, natural-looking smiles. He encourages patients interested in porcelain veneers to consult a dentist who excels in both aesthetics and dental artistry.
